Bret Hartman is an architecture, advertising, and editorial photographer based in northern Utah, with twenty-four years behind the camera.
His career began in photojournalism and grew from there, into television and entertainment, then into portraits of some of the most recognized faces in the industry. Those years taught him to work fast, read a room, and find the moment that matters. He carries that same instinct into architecture now, composing each image the way a painter composes a canvas, patient with light and deliberate with every line.
The result is work that favors quiet over spectacle, images built to hold up the way a good painting does, long after the first look.
He photographs residential and commercial architecture across Park City, the Wasatch Back, and Salt Lake City, Utah, and is available worldwide for architecture, advertising, and editorial commissions.
How he works
Light is the constraint that matters most, and it behaves differently everywhere. In the mountains, orientation and season decide when a building is worth photographing, and that gets settled before a date is set. On the California coast, fog does the deciding — Carmel and Santa Barbara give up an hour, sometimes less. Kiawah Island brings humidity and a low Atlantic sun. Knowing what a place will allow, before arriving, shapes everything that follows.
